Against All Odds

Rudy Ruettiger grew up in a lower income family of 14 children. He loved football, and even more, he loved Notre Dame. He was denied transfer to Notre Dame three times but never gave up on becoming part of his beloved alma mater. He kept his studies going in spite of a learning disability and worked on the side to fund his education and his eventual acceptance and transfer into Notre Dame. His love for both Notre Dame and football grew. It wasn’t easy for him, but he wasn’t going to give up.

Although he wasn’t a part of the Varsity squad – he was part of the Scout team that helps the Varsity team practice. He played hard, however, in spite of his small stature; his passion continued to grow. It wasn’t until the last game, the final two plays of his final season the coach decided it was time to give Rudy a chance to play in the Varsity game as he was only able to dream about until that time. The first play, on defense, he failed at getting to the opponent’s quarterback, but guess what happened with his final play? He sacked the quarterback! He was the first of two in Notre Dame history to be carried off the field by his teammates.

What an awesome testimony! Can you identify with Rudy? All odds were against him and his dreams – but he did not want to give up on them. He had an amazing passion. His perseverance, hard work and dedication to not only his dream but his support and encouragement for his team was incredible. He kept his passion growing and maturing inside while cheering on his teammates from the sidelines and encouraging them along the way. And then, his moment happened. He was living his dream.

Just like Rudy – you may have the passion. You may have the drive. You may have all it takes to be a part of something you can only dream about. If you stay the course and give life your all, give it your best, when the time is right you will be called forward off that bench. Your time of preparation is about to be transformed into an amazing and beautiful dream fulfilled.

Sometimes – all it takes is one defining moment of someone believing enough in us to help make that something happen and change our lives forever. Yet all the time, never give up believing it will happen, and you are on your way.

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” (2 Peter 1:5-7)

Blessings on you dear one, and glory to God!

Bonny,
