In honor of and in remembrance of all Mothers with all thanksgiving to God…
“When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Dear woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” (John 19:26-27)
While enduring pain and suffering on the cross, Jesus turned His focus and care toward His mother, Mary. He lovingly and tenderly spoke, releasing her to the care of His beloved disciple, John. It was a moment that radiated the love of Jesus for His mother whom He held so very dearly in His heart.
Here was this woman, heavy with grief and sorrow, kneeling helplessly at the foot of the cross, also suffering with a bittersweet melody – she was living the prophecy spoken to her in the Scriptures we now read:
“Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.’” (Luke 2:34-35)
Mary’s soul was indeed agonizing the piercing
sword as she witnessed her son, God’s son, breathe His final breath as He lived
out the prophecy of the cross. There was nothing she could do but trust God,
just as she did when she humbly and obediently said yes to the awesome responsibility yet beautiful
blessing of becoming Jesus’ mother.
She was faithful in carrying Jesus in her womb.
She was hope-filled through Jesus’ birth into this world. She was obedient throughout
His childhood and young adulthood. She was embraced throughout His final hours.
Mary indeed served well as the chosen servant as mother to Jesus.
Motherhood has been blessed and is enriched by the many
attributes Mary brought in its midst. Encourager. Provider. Supporter. Fruit
bearer. Love sharer. Powerful. Genuine. Kind. Compassionate. So very much more. We could learn an abundance through her example, through her
story that resonates the glory of God revealed. Her story
is the reality of Jesus in all our lives. Yet, with sweet revelation, we too
can resonate His reality through our own lives and share our own testimony of
His presence in our heart.
God’s blessing is upon all who are
called into motherhood in all ways He chooses to bring the blessing of a child
into a woman’s heart and life, whether through the
womb of her own, through the womb of adoption, or through the womb of
relationships.
His blessing begins with a seed He plants in the spirit of a
woman. The seed begins to grow, timely revealing all it is to become - an extra
serving of God’s fruit. Motherhood continues as
it reaches beyond the simple definitions as the world defines it, boldly
proclaiming the oh-so-special loving bond, uniquely blessed, as mother and
child, yet when motherhood is in full bloom, it becomes a window to recognizing
God’s unconditional love for us.
“As a mother comforts
her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over
Jerusalem." (Isaiah 66:13)
Bonny.
