The Perfect Fit

Recently I came across a discussion that posed the question, “If you know what you want and dream big enough, what are you willing to do to get what you want?” The discussion continued and was leaning toward the thinking that if we aren’t living our dreams, apparently we don’t desire them enough.

For years I was making my way toward my dreams, my goals, my plans, what I wanted to see happen in my life. I was establishing my steps and molding my future. I knew what I wanted and in my determined mindset, I was destined to be where I desired to be – at all costs. Yet, I came into a season that forced me to evaluate my steps. What I learned gave me new perspective and a new direction.

It’s okay to dream. It’s okay to desire. It’s okay to hope. In fact, I encourage it. I dare you! But if the journey towards a vision incorporates one way thinking - “it’s all about me”  and neglects the foundations of our steps no matter how much we want that vision to happen, we will find ourselves living a surface dream that fails to reach the greater reality.

This was true for me. While I was seeking good healthy goals, was it the best vision for my life – with all things considered? Even more – was it the best vision for the lives of others whom I would be reaching out to through that fulfilled dream? Good does not always mean best. Passion and desire don’t always run parallel to the gifts and talents God instills in us, nor in some situations do they indicate where God may be calling us. Yes, we can learn skills and grow into them, and our purpose may unfold from that point forward, but what if our abilities just don’t connect with our desires no matter how long we pursue them? Are our desires big enough to succeed on their own without ability? I knew it wasn’t about giving up on dreams. It wasn’t about downsizing them. It was about yielding to God’s will and seeing the bigger picture. It was about stirring up the passions, the gifts, the vision He put in me in one pot and sharing it when it’s ready to be served. Unique ingredients yield a unique calling.

We can meet Gods’s plan for our lives right where we are. His plan may bring us in a totally new direction to serve Him with greater capacity, greater potential and a rock-solid core foundation. We may discover the outcome to be a better fit with better results. What humbled empowerment!

Does this mean we should never approach God with our heart’s yearnings? No. He wants us to be comfortable sharing our desires with Him (see Matt 21:22). He honors that, but I believe we must first get to know our limitations and boundaries by knowing who he has created us to be yet to be available for Him to move without bounds through us as He desires. It’s amazing how more fulfilling, enlivening, and enriched our journey becomes when we settle ourselves into the space we align perfectly into – like a puzzle piece finding its place. No other piece will fit in that one spot, yet at the same time that piece will not fit into another’s. Amazing!

Since coming to these realizations, my journey has flowed smoother. I can see abundantly clearer where I am now and where I need to be. I no longer need to fulfill my own vision statement for my life but to simply be filled with His vision, His purpose for and through my life.  He is the foundation of my steps. So, am I dreaming big enough? What am I willing to do to get what I want? Somehow, these questions aren’t as important to me as they once were. Instead, I’d like to think on new questions: Is God big enough when I am dreaming? What am I willing to do to give as He desires? Can you relate?

Blessings on you dear one, and glory to God!

  1. Hi Bonny - God's word says that He gives us the desires of our hearts, but I believe that as we get closer to the Lord, our desires change in line with God's will for our lives. Great post
    God bless
